Article 25 undertook community engagement and participatory planning exercises in the informal waterfront settlements of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on the construction of a new community radio station and media centre.
The aim of this media centre was to give local people a voice, allowing them to communicate effectively, counter negative press, and demonstrate the capacity of excluded communities to contribute to development.
Our team joined representatives from Amnesty International and local and international NGOs, meeting with the local community stakeholders and assessing the physical and social resources that would be available on this project. During a ten day trip we held meetings with key stakeholders, community elders and young people growing up in the waterfront.
The resulting feasibility report was well received, with many community members demonstrating their enthusiasm to participate in mapping projects and participatory regeneration projects.
