Restoration of Murad Khane

Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, has been subjected to years of war and devastation, which has resulted in widespread building destruction. Developers have been trying to knock down much of the older sections of the city, which, despite suffering from neglect, offer a rich cultural heritage.

Article 25 was approached by the Afghan led TMF to help survey and assess the conditions of parts of Kabul’s medieval quarter, Murad Khane. To this we undertook extensive survey work and produced constructive recommendations for Turquoise Mountain Foundation’s future projects.

The artisan skills needed to restore and converse the heritage buildings of Afghanistan have been rapidly disappearing and these skills will be preserved through the academy. As a result, a renewed sense of pride in national cultural heritage will flourish and people will benefit from vocational training that will help them to find work.
