Sandra Piesik of 3 ideas Ltd is running a workshop from 1-14 September in France to showcase the use of date palm leaves to provide shelter.
In the Arab regions, date palm leaves have been used to provide shelter from the extreme climate for centuries. In today economic and ecological climate it seems appropriate to promote the use of easy to secure and highly effective indigenous building materials.
In this workshop, participants will create a dome 10m in diameter and 4m high, using a contemporary adaptation of a traditional method.
By combining western engineering with local, eco-friendly, traditional building, 3 ideas Ltd aims to create a food storage facility which will combat the issue of food waste while using a readily available material. The prototype, which could be used in the less economically developed countries, will be exhibited in London as part of the Food Art Installation.
