Article 25 is an operational UK registered charity that designs, builds, and manages projects to provide better shelter wherever there is disaster, poverty, or need. Article 25 provides built environment professional expertise; we work alongside aid organisations, NGOs, and communities around the world. Our mission is to bring experienced, field-appropriate professional skills and academically rigorous research findings to NGOs  engaged in building work.  Our role is the responsible stewardship of the building process from start to finish. We bring value to our partners and beneficiaries by:

  • Early and substantive consultation with end users to establish key priorities
  • Addressing vulnerability by encouraging local skills and building practices
  • Empowering local communities to lead long-term recovery and rehabilitation
  • Commitment to environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient practices
  • Rigorous consideration of local materials, labour, climate, and environment
  • Strict control of building costs to make best use of donor funds

Since its inception in 2006, Article 25 has completed 30 assignments worldwide. Some of the current and completed projects include:

  • Seismic mitigation housing programme in Northern Pakistan with Muslim Aid, UK (complete)
  • School for street children in Goa, India, with El Shaddai Street Child Rescue (complete)
  • Orphanage in Nkoranza, Ghana with Let Kids Smile (complete)
  • An 90m bridge on the Thai-Burmese border to replace one that was washed away by flood in 2005, with Whispering Seed, a US registered NGO (completing in 2009!)
  • Nursery school and clinic in Uganda for the Kyomya Sponsorship Project (current.)
  • Conservation of traditional architecture in Afghanistan with the Turquoise Mountain Foundation (a[25] role complete)

As a complement to our field-based work, Article 25 also collaborates with practitioners, universities, and organisations on research projects targeted towards testing and applying innovative and cost-effective technologies to community-based projects. Recent research workshops have focused on the use of bamboo as a structural material and the role of human urine as a binding agent in the making of mud bricks.

As part of this educational mission, Article 25 has also created the first ever industry recognised Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses in humanitarian architecture. As we grow we hope to build a platform where best practices can be shared and applied across regions and where professionals can discuss, contribute and share skills, knowledge, and new technologies. We are also the first NGO to provide PEDR (RIBA log book) appropriate professional work experience. We have also supervised and generated masters and diploma level theses with  volunteers.
