[ vernaculars collection ]

On Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007, for the first time in human history, the earth’s population became more urban than rural. The United Nations estimate that the world will be 51.3% urban by 2010. An unprecedented challenge for the built environment, how does one respond to the demands on urban mass housing and what happens to the unique rural villages that are left behind? Our built environment is changing before our eyes, how long will it be before the beautiful vernacular houses found in rural regions will become a thing of the past, to be replaced by a sprawling shanty town?

Vernaculars is a collection of images taken by Article 25 staff whilst out in the field. It documents some of the worlds most beautiful or affecting vernaculars and scenes, from traditional Saxon villages of Transylvania to what has now become today’s modern prevalent vernacular, the corrugated iron shack.
