Article 25 is working with Link Ethiopia to develop sporting facilities for the community of Lalibela. Once completed, the project will provide a football pitch to host zonal and regional competitions, as well as other sports courts to increase community participation. Changing rooms with washing and bathing facilities, as well as commercial spaces for small businesses and vocational training are also proposed.
We have recently completed a feasibility study trip with volunteer architects from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. The visit included group consultations with children from the local schools and leaders and officials of Lalibela’s government. The scheme was received very positively amongst both local community and government. The information collected is currently being used to inform the development of the design and we will return to Lalibela for further consultation.
[ project location ]
This project is located in Lalibela, Amhara Region of North Ethiopia.
[ project partner ]
Article 25 were approached by Link Ethiopia, a UK registered NGO with a base in Gonder. Their work consists of improving access to education in Ethiopia and providing schools with the basic education facilities and a good quality of teaching.
[ project type ]
There are over 3000 school children in living in Lalibela, most lacking the facilities to fulfil their sporting aspirations. The project will deliver an improved football pitch and sports courts with changing and shower facilities, as well as space for vocational training. The project will compliment the educational infrastructure within Lalibela.
[ problem addressed ]
With more students than school spaces, the children of Lalibela attend school according to a shift system where half of the children attend school on either the morning or the afternoon. Due to a lack of space and facilities the children are unable to take part in any practical sports education. The project will provide a place for the school children and community to fulfill their sporting passions as well as provide new learning opportunities through sport.
Many of the 3000 school children in living in Lalibela lack basic sanitation and hygiene facilities. To address this, the project includes washing and bathing facilities. The small business facilities will generate new opportunities for work, trade and vocational training.
