The Lesotho Children’s Counselling Unit (LCCU) is a local Basotho Charity which counsels and cares for abused and maltreated children.
Article 25 worked in collaboration with Sentebale, the Princes’ Foundation, on providing a new home for the LCCU. Our attention was called to it after an Article 25 team, working on another project in Lesotho, was asked to assess the existing building site. The building project had been halted due to poor construction and project management. A fire in the building previously housing the children made this project an urgent necessity.
[ project location ]
Mazenod, a village near Meseru, the capital of Lesotho
[ project partner ]
Sentebale was founded by Prince Harry and Lesotho's Prince Seeiso to help the forgotten victims of poverty and of the HIV/Aids epidemic ravaging this kingdom.
[ project cost ]
The budget for LCCU was £30,000
[ duration of project ]
Article 25 was appointed to take on the design and construction management of the LCCU in March 2007. After 12 months of on-off construction, which entailed demolition of some parts of the poorly constructed existing building and two devastating fires, the building was completed in April 2008.
[ problem addressed ]
When Article 25 initially visited the existing building, it was a shell of cement blocks that had been abandoned mid-project. Article 25 and Sentebale have worked together to transform the structure into a quality finished building. The centre provides an environment of care for abused and maltreated children in Lesotho.
