[ images ]   [ links ]

In January 2006, Article 25 was asked by El Shaddai Street Child Rescue to assist them in the design of a new school building in Assagao, North Goa in India. The project brief was to design a new school building to house approximately 250 children ranging from 4 - 16 years of age.

As it is an Open Learning school, the age of the children in each class varies. The Principal and co-founder of the school was looking for conventional classroom layouts within light, airy spaces that will have good natural ventilation and be able to contend with the large rainfall during the seasonal monsoon period.

[ project location ]

Assagao, near Mapusa, Goa.  This area has a temperate climate, and is hot and humid during the monsoon season from June to September.

[ project partner ]

El Shaddai Street Child Rescue - assisting over 13,000 children in Goa through night shelters, day care centres, counselling services and four large children's homes and the Shanti Niketan Open Learning Centre.

[ project cost ]

£60,000

[ duration of project ]

Article 25 was appointed in Jan 2006, and the building was completed in August 2007.

[ project type ]

Article 25 was approached to assist with the design and construction of a new school for 1,300 children.  The school is a Non-Formal and National Open School.  Seismic resistant construction and environmentally sustainable concepts are incorporated into the design.

[ problem addressed ]

Governmental Formal Schools are taught mostly in the local language and are attended only by children who go to the day care centres and night shelters.  Most of the children who will attend the Non-Formal School are from the slums in Goa with no access to basic education, health and sanitation.  Through consultation with children and teachers from the school, Article 25 have designed a fantastic school that the local community can cherish.
