Childrens Home, Nkoranza: GHANA

[ images ]   [ downloads ]   [ links ]

Article 25 was asked by the Dutch organisation Let Kids Smile to help with the design and construction of a new children's home in Nkoranza, central Ghana. As of the end of January 2007, the kids had been 'homeless' as the owner of the house they lived in suddenly wanted it back. For the duration of the planning and construction of the building, the children and their carers stayed with Ellen Seldenthuis and Morocco Ankomah Gyan, the co-ordinators for the children's home.

A plot of land was been bought to construct a new building to accommodate 25-30 children as well as 4 live-in 'mothers'. The site is about the size of a football pitch and is used by the children and the carers to grow crops and keep animals like goats and chickens, as well as to play their favourite game: football.

[ project  location ]

Nkoranza, central Ghana.  Nkoranza is a transitional region between the tropical, hot-humid south and the dry savannas of the north.  The town's population is approximately 5000 people.

[ project partner ]

Let Kids Smile - A Dutch organisation set up to run and sustain the children's home.

[ project cost ]

€26,000 (£20,000)

[ duration of project ]

Article 25 was appointed to take on the design and construction of the children's home in Nkoranza in December 2006.  By June 2007 the building was complete, taking just 4 1/2 months to construct.

[ project type ]

Article 25 was asked to assist with the design and construction of a children's home in Nkoranza, Ghana to accommodate 25-30 children and their 4 carers.  The surrounding area is to be used as farmland to generate income and help children learn the basic skills of farming responsibility.

[ problem addressed ]

The existing children's home was in poor condition and in desperate need of repair.  It was too small to accommodate more children and there was no possibility of expansion.  Let Kids Smile had one month to vacate the building and no existing building to rehouse the children could be found in the town.  In just 4 1/2 months, the children had a brand new, quality finished building to live in.
